About Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary in Bandipur
Bandipur Wildlife
Sanctuary in Bandipur is located in Chamarajanagar district in Karnataka. History tells us that this wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka’s Bandipur, became one of the first Tiger Reserves in India especially established under Project Tiger. This sanctuary was originally created in the 1930s by carving out a piece of land from the local hunting lands of Maharaja Voodiyar. Though it was then named Venugopal Wildlife Park, it was expanded later in 1941.
The topography of this sanctuary, which is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, is varied. You will notice scrub jungles interspersed with bushes and open patches in the eastern fringes whereas you will find tropical mixed deciduous forests in the northwestern fringes. So if you visit this sanctuary halfway down the Mysore-Ooty highway on the Deccan Plateau, you will find a variety of wildlife. Besides the birds, you will find a huge number of mammals including Asiatic elephants and gaurs in Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary. Moyar River with two minor rivulets, form the lifeline of the sanctuary, which also separate it from the adjoining Madumulai Sanctuary.
