The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1973 and is adjacent to the protected area of Nagarhole and Bandipur in the northeast and Mudimalai in the southeast. The wildlife sanctuary is an essential part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reservem. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary plays a significant role in conserving the biological heritage of the region.
The region is slightly undulating and form little hillocks in certain regions. The highest peak in the wildlife reserve is Karottimala which is almost 1160 meters high.
The weather in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is warm and pleasant. The region receives a considerable amount of rain between June and August. The warm months are from March to May.
The forest type of this region is mostly moist deciduous and patches of semi evergreen forests. A portion of the sanctuary is utilized in teak, grevelia and eucalyptus plantation.
Flora in the wildlife reserve includes rosewood, bamboo, vengal and more of such exquisite trees.
The wildlife population includes Civet Cats, Racquet-tailed Drongo, Monitor Lizards, Babblers, Woodpeckers, Jungle Fowls and a variety of snakes.
