Much of this part of India is peninsular plateau with black soil. Many old mountain ranges like Vindya, Satpura, Maikal, Aravali dot the central Indian topography and are home to a huge variety of flora and fauna. Some of the famous national parks in central India are:

Bandhavgarh National Park
One of the most visited national parks, Bandhavgarh is famous for its tigers and was included in the Project Tiger in 1993. It was declared a national park in the year 1968.

Kanha National Park
Located in the Mandla district of Madhya Paradesh, Kanha is the largest of the oldest tiger reserves. The elephant safari at Kanha is very popular.

Panna National Park
Besides being a famous tiger reserve, Panna in internationally famous for its wild cats, deer and antelope. The night safari at Gangau is a major attraction.

Pench National Park
Also included in the Project Tiger, the Pench National Park is forest that blossomed inspiration in Rudyard Kipling to write the famous Jungle Book. It is located at the southern part of the Satpura range.

Indravati National Park
Located in the state of Chhattisgarh, Indravati was declared a sanctuary in 1975. It derives its name from the Indravati river which lies at the west and north of the forest.
