Periyar boasts of 35 species of mammals which includes elephants, bisons, antelopes, sambars, wild boars and tigers. The avian life here consists of over 260 species including blue-winged parakeet, Nilgiri wood-pigeon, white-bellied tree pie, laughing thrushes, flycatchers, Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes.
Reptiles and Marine Life
The Periyar reptilian family includes Pythons, king cobras, flying lizards, flying squirrels, flying snakes and last but not the least, flying frogs. You can spot monitor lizards basking in the sun, on the rocks along the lakeshore.
