About Kaziranga National Park
The one-horn rhino or unicorn as it is known is the prized attraction of the Kaziranga National Park in Assam. The park, which has recently celebrated the 100 years of survival of this celebrity animal in Assam, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Assam. Kaziranga National Park is situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra and is covered with dense tropical forests, marshes and tall elephant grass.
It was in 1905, when the rhinos in the park were on the verge of extinction as poachers and hunters had reduced their number to a paltry 12. An important step of saving this behemoth animal was taken and the park was declared a reserve forest in 1908. The park was given the status of a wildlife sanctuary in 1940 and in 1974 the park was declared a national park. In 1985, Kaziranga National Park was declared a UNESCO Heritage Site. Today Kaziranga National Park is home to largest population of rhinoceros in India.
No doubt the one-horned rhino towers the other animals in the park but there are animals that attract a lot of attention and interest in tourists. Some of the animals that are visible in the Kaziranga National Park are elephants, wild boar, pythons, Indian bison, leopard, sloth beers, capped langurs, hog deer and tigers.
