Manas Wildlife Sanctuary , one of the most picturesque wildlife reserves in the world, was established in 1928. The sanctuary covers an area of approximately 1000 sq miles, 151 miles of which forms the core area covered under the famous Project Tiger. Manas National Park, known for its wildlife diversity, is home to over 20 most endangered species of birds and wild animals, such as the Hispid Hare and Pigmy Hog.
Other famous wildlife sanctuaries and national parks of East India are Namdapha Wildlife Sanctuary, Simlipal Wildlife Sanctuary, Sunderbans Wildlife Sanctuary, Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Keibul Lamjao Wildlife Sanctuary, Sirohi Wildlife Sanctuary and Kangchendzonga Wildlife Sanctuary.
