Location

Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary is one of most renowned and important wildlife sanctuaries in East India. Situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Assam, the Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary is the finest sanctuary in East India.

Background

Back in 1905, the rhinos in Kaziranga National Park were on the brink of extinction as poachers and hunters had reduced their number to a mere 12. To save this mammoth animal, the park was declared a reserve forest in 1908. Later, in 1940, the park was officially declared a wildlife sanctuary, and attained the status of a national park in 1976. In 1985, Kaziranga National Park was declared a UNESCO Heritage Site.

Major Attractions

Kaziranga National Park, home to the largest population of rhinoceros in India, recently celebrated the 100 years of survival of the one-horned rhino. Other animals that attract tourists in the park are elephants, wild boar, pythons, Indian bison, leopard, sloth beers, capped langurs, hog deer and tigers. You can also venture for an Elephant Safari to explore the park on elephant-back, accompanied by authorized and trained Mahouts to guide you.

Besides, the Kaziranga National Park is an ideal place for bird-watching. Some of the species of birds that may be sighted are Pallas's fishing eagle, white-tailed eagle, oriental honey buzzard, brahminy kite, black-shouldered kite and grey-headed fishing eagle. During winter, migratory birds also flock the sanctuary.

Climate

The best time to visit Kaziranga National Park is from November to April, as the winters are cool and summers are warm there. However, the rainy season should be avoided.
