Manas Wildlife
Sanctuary also known as Kamrup Sanctuary is on the foothills of the Himalayas, southeast of river Manas; a part of it extends to Bhutan. The Park known earlier as North Kamrup is a Sanctuary from 1928. The sanctuary is developed as a Tiger Reserve from 1973 and upgraded to a National Park in1990. In 1995, UNESCO accorded it World Heritage Site. Manas Wildlife Sanctuary houses 20 endangered species including rare golden langur, hispid hare, pygmy hog, red pandas etc. There are two subspecies of Hornbill found here pied and grey variety. The Park is rich elephants, clouded leopard, Tiger, gaur, wild buffaloes, one horned Rhinoceros, capped Langur, civet cat, sloth bear, sambar, swamp deer, hog deer, otter, etc.
The forest is moist Tropical Deciduous type and is spaced intermittently by wetlands. To maintain the ecological balance and save the extinction of the Hispid Hare the Wetlands are mandatory. There is Sal forest and simul, khoir, udal, sida, bohera and kanchan trees in and around the park.
It symbolizes history that has witnessed the vicissitudes of nature, the travails of wildlife development, the gradual recognition given to this nature's bestowal, and consequent emergence of conservation ideology. Despite the onslaught of biotic disturbances and manual disturbances Manas, with its own identity, stands a testimony of nature's intrinsic self-reviving power.
Climate:
The temperature of the region is tropical. The temperature can rise up to 38 °C in summer and during winter, the temperature hovers around 11°C
