Project Tiger began with a strong commitment towards the conservation of Tigers- ironically the National animal of India. The year 1973 saw a number of forest areas in India declared as reserves for Tigers with the launch of Project Tiger. It was this very motivation of safeguarding the natural habitat of the Tigers, which lay the foundation of Manas Tiger Reserve in Assam. Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra, the reserve falls in the drainage area of innumerous rivers and streams. One of the stream which traces its course through the reserve is River Mans, after which the reserve has been named.
The unique biosphere of the region has lent it an equally exclusive lineage of flora and fauna. Over 20 species of endangered birds and animals as enlisted in the IUCN Red Data Book bear, documented in the Manas Park bear witness to its rich and highly jeopardized wildlife. Some of them being:
Golden Langur
Red panda, sparingly spotted at higher altitudes
Hispid hare
Pigmy hog
Safaris
The call of the wild draws thousands of wildlife enthusiasts and photographers to the Manas Park throughout the year. The adventure into the wild can be undertaken on either boats or elephants available inside the Park. The kingly experience of mounted on the Maharajas is arguably the best way to observe the untamed in their natural habitat. This 3-hour ride commences from Mothanguri.
For those more inclined in snapping the water birds or animals as they come to the water pool to quench their thirst can opt for boat rides.
Kindly note, that the Forest department doesnot operate any jeep safaris, though jeeps can be hired from outside the Park along with the services of a trained guide.
