When Project
Tiger was launched in 1973, a number of forest areas in India were declared as tiger reserves. It was at this time the Manas Tiger Reserve was formed in the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary of Assam. In 1997, the number of tigers in the Manas Tiger Reserve was 89. Significantly, there are a large number of elephants in the reserve, estimated to be around 2000.
Other animals in the tiger reserve include sambar, rhinoceros, gaur, swamp deer, hog deer, Asiatic wild buffalo, hoolock gibbons, capped langurs, gaurs (Indian bison), wild dogs, Assamese macaques and elusive species like the clouded leopard, golden cat, pangolin, fishing cat, pygmy hog and leopard. Catch sight of the rare and enchanting red panda seen occasionally in the elevated areas of the forest.
Birds
The tiger reserve in the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is home to about 450 species of birds such as the great pied hornbill, wreathed hornbill, different species of waterfowls and Bengal florican.
Marine life
Only three amphibian species exist at the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, including the Ganges dolphins.
Reptiles
There are 36 types of reptiles present in the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary including different species of snakes and the Monitor lizards. The Assam roofed turtle was spotted as recently as 1989.
