About The Sanctuary
Tucked away in the state of captivating Kerala, set against the high ranges of the Western Ghats, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary lies on the banks of the Periyar lake, an artificial lake, at Thekkady. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, with its dense evergreen, moist deciduous, savannah grass lands, adds another shade of green called ‘Periyar Green’ to your clichéd shade card. Spread over an area of 777sqkm. of which 360sqkm. is thick evergreen forest, it was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. It is a favorite habitat of animals like elephants, sambars, tigers, gaurs, lion tailed macaques and Nilgiri langurs. The awesome artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River is a plus point of the sanctuary.
Climate
The temperature oscillates between 18°C during November-March and 32°C from April to October.
