About Nagarhole National Park
Nagarhole National Park is located about 96 kilometres from Mysore in Karnataka. The park, which is home to a large number of birds and animals, is part of the Mudumalai Sanctuary. The Nagarhole National Park has derived its name from two Kannada words 'Naga', which means snake and 'Hole, which means streams. The park shares its boundary with Bandipur National Park.

The park lies within the Coorg and Mysore districts and was set up in 1955. In 1974, the area of the park was extended and Mysore forests were included in the park. The original forest was a game reserve of the Maharajas of Mysore. The Park has now been renamed and is now called Rajiv Gandhi National Park.
There are a few rivers that drain the national park; Kabini is the largest river on which a dam was built in 1974. Other rivers that flow through the park are Lakshmana, Teentha and Nagarhole.
Nagarhole National Park has deciduous forest and a beautiful landscape. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna. The park is home to elephant, tiger, panther, sambar, chital, sloth bear, leopard, jungle cat, jackal and wild dog. Apart from wild animals, the park is teeming with a large number of birds. About 250 species of birds are present in the Nagarhole National Park. Some of the birds that you may come across are Malabar trogon, crested hawk-eagle, crested serpent-eagle and Malabar pied-hornbill.

Travel Tips
It is ideal to arrive at the park before dusk, as the road leading to lodges closes at 6 pm. Those interested in trekking should avoid visiting the park during monsoons.
Climate
During summer (March-May) the temperature does not rise above 33°C. Winter lasts from November-January and temperature drops to 14°C.
How To Reach
You can take a flight from metro cities of India to Mysore or Bangalore, which are two nearest airports from Nagarhole. You can also reach Mysore and Bangalore by a train. Nagarhole is well connected by road with other parts of the state.
There are a number of lodges and rest houses in the vicinity of the park. The forest department runs two rest houses that can be booked in advance. You can stay at Kutta or along the Nagarhole main road.
