About Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
If elephants are what you love to see on your wildlife tour, there is no better place than the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala. The sanctuary was established in 1895 and is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in India. The sanctuary was declared a tiger reserve in 1978.

The sanctuary is located in the foothills of the Western Ghats and is spread over an area of 778 sq km. The artificial lake that provides a perfect photo op to visitors was result of the water resource management plan undertook by the British in 1895.
The sanctuary is home to a number of animals that include elephant, tiger, gaur, wild pigs, sambhar, barking deer, mouse deer, Indian wild dog and dole. The Periyar Lake is an ideal medium to watch the wildlife at the sanctuary. You can take a boat ride on the lake and watch animals busy grazing or basking in the winter sun. Early morning is an ideal time to see elephants. You can see herds of elephant drinking water, bathing or simply coming out of the verdant jungle. Trekking through the sanctuary is another exciting activity that you can enjoy in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
Since March and April are the driest months, you can spot a large number of animals near the lake. If luck is on your side, you can even spot a tiger near the lake.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to some 100 species of butterfly and 240 species of bird.
