The headquarters of the sanctuary is at Sasan. It has a forest rest-house as well, a reminisce of the nostalgic circuit houses.
Topography of Sansan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary:
As the name clearly suggests, the sanctuary is endowed with a rich cover of Gir forest type. To explain further, it is a mixed deciduous type of forest with teak, ber, flame of the forest, jamun, a variety of acacia, particularly babul, Tendu and Dhak trees. The hilly terrain of the National park is dotted with innumerable bouncing streams that provide relief to the forest’s wild inhabitants during scorching summer.
Owing to its strategic location in the Gujarat peninsula in South West India, low undulating hills with sparse, stunted overgrowth lend a rugged contour to the sanctuary interspersed with large patches of grasslands.
Climate of Sansan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary:
Summer is the longest season in Gir with mercury ranging from 10ºC to nearly 45ºC. April and May are the hottest months
Monsoon showers begin around middle of June and continue up to September. The highest rainfall recorded so far being 1,866 mm and the minimum recorded being 199mm.
Considering the pivotal role of water in the well-being of Forest fauna, around 350 waterholes are maintained by the park staff and in the absence of plenty rainfall, replenished through water tankers from outside.
