Introduction
Indian Rhinoceros are famous for its one horned head. The horns are found irrespective of gender but the baby ones do not have them. The rhinos are found in the mountain foot of Himalayas especially in the valleys of the river Brahmaputra.

Estimated Population & Status
The population of the rhinoceros is decreasing day by day due to human interference for hunting in the animal world. The maximum number rhinos in the world are located in Indian sanctuaries like in Kaziranga and Manas.
Out of approximately 2500 rhinoceros in the world almost 1700 rhinoceros are located in India itself.
Physical Characteristics
The Indian male rhinoceros weigh about 2000 kgs whereas the female weigh 1600 to 1800 kgs. They are generally very solitary and peaceful animals but can be deadly if situation arises. The height of a male is about 5.9 feet whereas the female remains about 5.2 feet. The skin is very thick and loosely folded which act as armor for the animal. There is a horn near the mouth which is the animals’ weapon to fight against the intruders.
Habitat
The mushy grass land and low muddy pond are the favorite destination of the Indian Rhinoceros. They love to spend the lazy day in the muddy pool and they relax and pass their whole day in such activities.
Diet
Indian rhinoceros’ are very active at the night and in the early morning. They eat their food mainly in this time and they feed on tree leaves, branches, twigs, fruits and sometimes crops.
Behavior
The Indian rhinoceros are very lonely animals and most of the time they roam about alone but a calf stays with the mother for several years. The female are very quiet by nature and males are aggressive towards the foreigners and in the mating season. A wild rhinoceros can live up to 38 to 45 years.
