The Bandhavgarh National Park is situated at a distance of about 195 km from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. It is within the confines of Vindhyas mountain range of Central India surrounded by the hills, rivers and streams. The park has thick growth of forests of the Bamboos, Deciduous trees, Sal trees and meadows and grasslands.
The Bandhavgarh National Park is well known the world over for the Royal Bengal Tigers. The park gives habitation to almost 22 faunal species and 250 species of birds. Other species that have made the park their home are the Cheetals, Gaur, Leopard, Sambar and faunal species of several other varieties. In comparison to Kanha National Park, the Bandhavgarh National Park is small in size but almost the same numbers of tigers are found here as in the Kanha National Park. Bandhavgarh also has a population of medium-sized bison.
Bandhavgarh was the game reserve of the Maharajas of Rewa but fell into negligence for a long time due to lack of Royal patronage. It was converted into a national park in the year 1968 to check uncontrolled poaching in the area. Initially, it had a core area of 105 sq. km, which extended in 1986 and included two Sal Forests adjoining Bandhavgarh. The park comes under the Project Tiger.
