Located on the Mysore-Ooty Highway in Karnataka, Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary is considered one of the most popular national parks in India. It was established in 1973 and became one of the first Indian Tiger Reserves. The Bandipur National Park stretches over an area of about 875 square kilometers.
This wildlife reserve experiences a moderate temperature and sundry geographical features best suited for the regular living of the wildlife. The diverse vegetation found in the Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary includes dry deciduous forests to tropical mixed deciduous forests.
The Bandipur wildlife reserve houses over 200 species of birds and rare animals like four-horned antelope, Golden Jackal, Leopard Cat and Sloth Bear. Reptiles like Bamboo Pit Snake, Vine Snake, Russell’s Viper and Monitor Lizard are found here.
The best time to visit the Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary is between April and October. The weather during this time is extremely pleasant for the tourists as well as the animals. The back waters of the Kabini Reservoir invites numerous large mammals especially elephants and gaurs.
