Established in 1955, the Kanha National Park was declared as a tiger reserves twenty years later. Shaped like a horse shoe, the Kanha wildlife reserve is drained by the Suparna River.
The Kanha forest is mainly a combination of Sal and mixed deciduous trees. The trees are tall and exceptionally imposing.
The Kanha National Park houses some rare species of animals like the Barasingha. Other wildlife animals found in the Kanha wildlife sanctuary are mouse deer, nilgai, peafowl, porcupine, python, sambhar and sloth bear. Kingfishers, jungle fowl, partridge, spotted parakeets, teals and woodpeckers are also found here.
The two main entry points to Kanha are Khatia, which is 3 kilometers from Kisli and Mukki. Kisli is 165 kilometers from Jabalpur. Via Motinala and Garhi, Mukki is 203 kilometers from Jabalpur. Kanha can be reached by air as well. The nearest airport is Nagpur. The nearest railway station to Kanha is Jabalpur.
